Women led collectives – Dharna as they call them there in Sonbhadra district, Uttar Pradesh, control close to 20 000/ Hectares of forest land. This is the site of struggle, building anew and the hope of the Union.
And the day in 1994, when villagers wrote their names on the Forest Department Registers to enter the forests en masse, and came back with head-loads of firewood and Bhabar Grass – the access and collection rights of which was the focal point of the struggle in Ghad Kshetra without anybody stopping them.
